Styling Selena's Painted Porch

Last year for Houzz.com, I featured a Dallas bungalow belonging to Selena and Alun Urquhart. One of my favorite things Selena had done to her back patio was to paint a blue and white Moroccan style stencil directly onto her wood deck. It looked like an area rug. I liked it so much that I returned to her home a few months later for a commissioned magazine cover shoot. This was my first crack at styling and photographing for a magazine cover. Here are the results!

Woven Textiles | Layer it On

A smattering of boho textiles for a Wednesday morning? Yes, please. Honestly, when my home needs a pick-me-up, layering woven textiles is my go-to decorating trick. Pillows, rugs, tapestries, window treatments and wall hangings are the quickest and least permanent way to spiff up your space. And to prove my point, I submit the evidence below:

Easy Breezy Boho Day

There is nothing better than a gauzy dress, a light breeze and a few open hours.  This is not how I'll be spending my day, but I sure wish it was.  Today I'm running errands with kids in tow, prepping meals and doing a large back-log of laundry. Maybe I'll keep my eyes open for a gauzy dress while I'm running errands.

Aged Perfection

I just finished the new issue of House Beautiful, which I look forward to reading every month.  I always find wonderful ideas to take away.  But I always feel a little put off when I see spread after spread of rooms which have been designed with all new furniture or completely refurbished furniture and fixtures.  Isn't it okay to have old, worn pieces in our homes anymore?  Of all the things in my home, the pieces I love most are worn, frayed and loved into aged perfection.

Global Texture

Nothing is more exciting to me than the idea of traveling around the world collecting gorgeous global textiles and then coming home to strew them all around my house.  I love this look.  I always have and probably always will.  When I hear the phrase, "Live with what you love", these are the kinds of images that pop into my head.

Bold Pattern in the Bedroom

Instead of toning my bedroom down for autumn, as I usually do, I think I'll do the opposite.  I'm going to pull out some big bold jewel tone patterns for the new season.  Now that my pantry is partially in order, I need a new weekend project.  A little cosmetic makeover in my bedroom is just what the doctor ordered. I'll post before and after photos on Monday!

Red and Blue

Usually red and blue can get a little patriotic for my taste.  I think "yay America" or "yay France".  But if you take the blue in a different direction like baby blue or aqua, I stop humming the national anthem and things start to perk up!  I love these soft blues and reds together.  They have a worn, but energized feel that really make the spaces cheery and not too serious.

Vintage Royal "Arrow" Typewriter

First: a funny story.  Funny and in hind sight, dangerous.  I was standing at my stove prepping veggies to go into a pot that was on a burner.  I stood there day dreaming about possible design ideas for my living room when I smelled something odd and felt heat on my belly.  I look down and my shirt - my favorite J.Jill pullover - was on fire. On freaking FIRE!  I beat the flames out with my vegetables and assess the damage.  No burns.  Good.  No stove damage. Good.  But my poor shirt is a goner.  So, to memorialize my favorite shirt, I made her into a throw pillow for the bed in the guest room, which I am trying to spruce up for a family visit this weekend.

Ta da!  I backed the pillow with fake leather.

This was the original shirt... but mine, of course, was navy blue.

And now to the title of my post... I scored this amazing vintage Royal "Arrow" Typewriter for my Etsy shop.  Its a portable and comes happily situated in its own case.  The original ad in the Sears Catalog is below.

Isn't she pretty?

Napkin Throw Pillows

I'm a throw pillow whore and I don't care who knows it.  Recently, I saw an embroidered suzani throw pillow that I really wanted, but it cost a million-ga-jillion dollars.  Of course, I had to walk away.  Then, while browsing Cost Plus World Market, I found some napkins on sale that had a similar pattern and color scheme as the super expensive throw pillow.  I bought two of the sale napkins ($1.99 each) to convert into throw pillows!  I backed them with material from an old green twill curtain, found two inexpensive down pillow inserts from IKEA and voilà - a perfect pair.  What do you think?

...and on a separate note, thank you to Alcira of The Nero Chronicles
for naming me one of her "Stylish Bloggers".  Made my day!

Bench seating with throw pillows

This look always makes me happy.  I fantasize about someday selling my living room furniture, all of which was mostly purchased on Craig's List anyway, and replacing it with wall to wall Moroccan style bench seating. Then, I'd litter my benches with amazing throw pillows.  Am I the only one with this fantasy?

I'd even settle for one wall of bench seating and throw pillows.
