Purple Room by Billy Cotton

I recently found this eggplant colored living room while browsing the Domino archives. It is the family home of designer Billy Cotton. Built in the 1850's, this home sits at the edge of Lake Champlain in Vermont. Cotton's modern renovations suit this picturesque farm house, but this purple living room really pushes the envelope. It's made me re-think purple as a wall color!

When Bohemians Do Pink

This morning I awoke to my five year old requesting Valentines, which were to be handed out today in class. Mommy fail! So, I worked some mama-craft magic and produced eleven handmade Valentines in about 10 minutes thanks to THIS post I found via Pinterest.  Construction paper, scissors, hole punch, old balloons from last birthday party - BOOM.  Handmade Valentines, ta da!

Today, I'm thinking pink.
I don't have a lot of pink in my house or in my wardrobe.
But if I did, it would go a little something like this:

Create Some Drama

I guess I've always been kind of a drama queen. My grandmother was calling me "Sarah Bernhardt" when I was old enough to cut my own potatoes. I don't throw epic fits anymore, but I'm still prone to exaggeration and wearing red. I usually, however, keep my drama confined to the decorating and design of my home.  Here are some lovely dramatic spaces to get your creative juices flowing.

Browsing Cost Plus World Market

I had a few free moments yesterday, so I popped in to my local Cost Plus World Market for a look-see.  I love this place.  I always find something fun and interesting for my home or my kitchen cabinets.  I can pick up a great bottle of wine, a set of fresh towels, some ethnic jewelry and a little goodie for my three year old.  I haven't been in to the store in a while and I was so happy to see their most recent collections.  These are some of the items I might come home with if I were on a little spree.

Guest Posting at JPM Design

Today, I'm a guest at JMP Design with some high style, low cost design ideas.  So head over to see what I've cooked up and don't forget to say hello!

In the meantime, I'll leave you with some eye candy: Tine K Home always has gorgeous photos of their product and I thought I'd post some of my favorites from their newest offering.  These images have such a Rembrandt quality - making gorgeous use of light and dark.

Lavender

I brought home some gorgeous hydrangeas last week and they've have made me so happy.  They also inspired this post.  Purple can be so pretty.  I don't have a lick of it in my house, except for the hydrangeas, but I'd think its time for a little "pop of purple" as Sue from The Zhush always says.

P.S.  Thanks for all your sweet notes yesterday.  I was a zombie!  My husband came to my rescue (even though he is just as sleep deprived) and let me sleep last night from 10:30pm - 7:30am!  I haven't had that kind of sleep since last summer before Charlie was born.

Deep Color

Time to be bold and bring the jewel tones out of hiding.  Cobalt, emerald, ruby, amethyst, saffron - this time of year cries out for deep, rich color and saturated hues.  I almost wet my pants when I saw the burgundy tufted sofa below from Horchow.  Dear Santa....

An act of passion

If, as Coco Chanel once said, "An interior is the natural projection of the soul", then the interiors pictured below are projecting all over the place.  These bursting, jewel toned, heavily textured spaces reveal passion, pleasure, self awareness and true Bohemian soul.  Our homes should be love letters to ourselves and these rooms fit the bill.

Winter Jewels

Purple is big this fall and I can see why.  While you're pulling out all of your holiday reds and ruby-hued decorations, think about throwing in a shot of purple.  It really does make everything merry and bright.

Lavender + Gray

I have recently fallen in love with this wintry color combo.  Lavender and gray.  Hydrangea and fog.  Lilac and stone.  Heather and heath.  I love every subtle incarnation of these two colors.  I think that this might be a gorgeous color choice for my master bedroom.  I've already got the gray walls, I just need some lovely lavender bedding.... and a different bed... oh, and some different furniture... and new art... and... and...

Because it pleases me.

What do these photos have in common? I'm not sure... maybe a little floral, maybe a little purple, maybe a little zen. When ever I decorate, cook, rearrange, create or blog, I'm mostly looking for things that please me. Today, at 41 weeks pregnant, I'm comforted by these blossoms and soft color schemes. Perhaps I'll pick up a bouquet of purple flowers for my bedside table - a gift to myself in anticipation of my upcoming labor and birth.

Add Something Purple

This was my grandmother Jane's advice for everything. She was a costumer for the theater and when ever she'd get to the end of an ensemble, she'd say, "It needs something. Let's add something purple." And she was always right. Purple makes it pop. I think you can apply this to interior design too!

Want more purple?
Here's an old post from
last year you might enjoy!

Pretty in Purple

This is my last day in Scotalnd. Almost every night over the past two weeks the sunset has boasted a mezmerizing array of purple pinky hues. Its truly astonishing what a little light and water can do to an otherwise blank sky canvas. Isn't it grand?

Now its time to snatch it out of the sky and bring it into my home.
What to do, what to do? Here are some ideas:

Easter Sunday

A very happy Easter Sunday to you all. I'm spending the day at home with family, good food and a slew of awesome Netflix movies that have been on my bucket list for a while. It is a gray - almost lavender hued day - here in Dallas and in honor of the funny weather, I've complied this group of photos as a little Easter eye candy. Enjoy and cheers to you all!

Lavender, purple, eggplant and more.

Like most people in the process of designing a new home, I am constantly collecting gorgeous photos that speak to me. If I love it, I grab it for future reference. I don't judge it or mull it over or wonder "where in the world would I do something like this?" Even if I know that the photo has no bearing on my lifestyle or my family home - if it catches my eye and makes me feel all gooey inside, then it goes in the dream folder. Then, when I go back and look at them, I notice certain patterns emerge. This week, I noticed that I am really gravitating towards purples. This is something I would not have known if I hadn't been collecting and ferreting photos. So, maybe I need some dusky lavender accents to go in that gray-brown living room I'm fixing up?

Check out this lavender ceiling! Love it!
