I'm Sarah - mama to Walker and Charlie and partner to Jack. I am also a writer, artist, photographer, actor and blogger. Originally from California, with a short stint in Oregon and Washington, I've landed in Dallas, Texas of all places. My formal training was at the Pacific Conservatory for the Performing Arts as an actor and designer and I also nabbed a creative writing degree from Mills College a few years after my theater training.

I began blogging eight years ago as an online dream journal where I could catalog my favorite design ideas and inspirations. La Maison Boheme quickly became a community where I met bloggers, designers, and people who would help me develop and more fully embody my personal aesthetic.

When I had my second child in 2010, my life was deeply altered. My little one had survived a stroke in utero and began presenting signs of Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy. Faced with the need to become a full time stay-at-home mom, I turned to freelance writing, photography and art. This transition has been one of the most fulfilling parts of my life and I love working for myself and collaborating with my local and online community.

Thank you, dear readers, for being a part of La Maison Boheme. I encourage you to comment and post links to your own site. Feel free to email me, and don't be discouraged if it takes me a while to get back to you. I would love to meet you and see the world through your eyes.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why the title La Maison Boheme?
It is French and translates as "The Bohemian Home". Bohemia is actually the old term for what is now part of the Czech Republic. But for my blog title, I claim the more modern usage created in France in the mid 1800s to describe a group of like-minded artists and adventurers who lived unconventional lifestyles. I'm an artist and in many ways, postmodern bohemian culture speaks to me. I'm inspired by those who set their inner compass towards an unorthodox or anti-establishment viewpoint, who live apart from conventional society and craft their life and art in a radical manner. La Maison Boheme seemed like the perfect invocation of both home and hearth mixed with the bohemian aesthetic.  La Vie Boheme!

Did you take all of the photos in your posts?
No. I did not. While I take most of the photos on my blog, many are sourced from other talented people. I always try to give proper credit when using the work of other artists. If you see your own work incorrectly credited, please contact me.

What kind of camera do you use?
I currently have a Nikon D5100. I also use my smart phone.

What does your house look like?
My home is always changing. But generally, on a good day, it looks like THIS.

Why do you sometimes write about Radical Homemaking and what is that?
Yes, on Mondays, I write about Radical Homemaking, a term I borrowed from Shannon Hayes's book, Radical Homemakers. Basically, I am in the process of transitioning our home life from one that is mostly centered around consuming (water, electricity, groceries, technology, services, etc.) to one that centers around creating and producing. I am inspired by the idea that we don’t have to rely on nameless, faceless corporations to feed, clothe, shelter and entertain us while they treat their employees poorly and poison the environment. So yes, less spending and more making. This involves, but is not limited to vegetable gardening, composting, back yard chickens and DIY home improvement. We are doing this for economic, health and environmental reasons. Plus, it's just plain fun! I've written more specifically about this in the posts below:

Why do you write about your creative process?
On Saturdays, I write a feature called In the Studio where I share photos of my art studio, in-process paintings and finished art work. I also write about my creative process. I do this because I like talking about my art. I am fascinated by other artists - their motives, their inspirations, their biography, their pitfalls, their process. And I learn about my own process (and hone my own skills) when I talk about my work.

How do you do all that you do?
I don't do it all. Most things in my life are left undone. And what I do accomplish happens because I have help - my husband is most certainly my "other half". Like most online spaces, La Maison Boheme is where I celebrate and share my best intentions. I try to put my most joyful self forward online as I do in life. Sure, life gets crazy and scary and chaotic sometimes. But I also am a woman on a mission. First, I want to provide a secure, safe and joyful home life for my family. Secondly, I want to live a full and passionate creative life filled with beauty. I plan my time as well as my resources to facilitate both. And sometimes when it all breaks down and shit hits the fan, I sit down to write about it. For instance, in this post:

Melt Down
