Card: Release Shame

Landscape: Spirit/Intuition

Title of Painting: Joan

Interpretation: Aneta Stępień, professor of cultural studies at Trinity College in Dublin writes “Shame is at once a private and a social emotion. Internally, shame is a sense of our moral compass – an indication of what is appropriate in our interactions with others. But shame is also toxic when used to discipline, to oppress and to exclude others.” This latter understanding of shame is at the heart of this card. Whatever your history, whatever your trespasses, whatever wounds you’ve spent your life nursing — you are worthy of love. Today, breathe into the center of that secret shame, holding part of your heart hostage, and know that it no longer serves you. Thank it for its lessons. Exhale. A new way of moving through the world awaits. Step out into the light. Feel the sun on your face. Healing is possible.

Deeper Resonance: This piece is named for Joan of Arc. It was created with the idea that even the most saintly, admired and brave among us hold a secret shame.
